Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been ordered to pay $1.36 million in unpaid legal fees tied to his role in challenging the 2020 election results on behalf of President Donald Trump.
Judge Arthur Engoron issued the ruling Tuesday in favor of attorney Robert Costello and his firm, Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP, who represented Giuliani in more than 10 lawsuits, disciplinary hearings, and multiple criminal investigations. With added interest and legal expenses from the recovery suit, the total amount Giuliani owes is approximately $1.6 million.
Giuliani argued he had not received invoices, but Engoron rejected the claim. A spokesman for Giuliani said he would appeal, calling the ruling politically motivated given Giuliani’s long association with Trump.
Costello’s firm represented Giuliani in proceedings involving the House Jan. 6 committee, special counsel Jack Smith, and the Fulton County District Attorney, among others. Giuliani had paid only $214,000 of his total $1.57 million bill.
The ruling adds to Giuliani’s mounting legal troubles, which include disbarment in New York, a $148 million defamation judgment against him, and injuries from an August car crash in New Hampshire.
