A Texas judge expanded Attorney General Ken Paxton’s (R) restraining order against former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) and his PAC, Powered by People, over fundraising tied to Democratic lawmakers who fled the state during the redistricting battle.
Judge Megan Fahey ruled Saturday that O’Rourke’s organization cannot transfer money outside Texas, citing violations of state law. The order also bars platforms like ActBlue from moving donations for the PAC beyond Texas borders.
Paxton has accused O’Rourke of bribery, claiming his PAC misled donors by paying legislators’ personal expenses while they avoided voting on GOP-led maps. Fahey’s ruling found the conduct “false, misleading, or deceptive” under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
O’Rourke, a former presidential candidate, said Powered by People raised over $1 million for state Democrats during the special session, including for the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and the Mexican American Legislative Caucus.
Paxton celebrated the ruling: “Lawless actions have consequences, and Beto’s finding that out the hard way.” He added that Democrats who “scam Texans” will face the “full force of the law.”
