WASHINGTON, DC — A sharp exchange between top political figures escalated Monday as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries publicly accused White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt of spreading false claims following a shooting tied to the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

Speaking at a press conference, Jeffries called Leavitt a “stone-cold liar” after she blamed Democratic rhetoric for contributing to the incident. He criticized her for focusing on statements from Democrats while ignoring actions and rhetoric tied to “MAGA extremists,” including references to the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

Leavitt, speaking earlier at a White House briefing, pointed to comments from Jeffries and other Democrats as examples of what she described as escalating political rhetoric. She cited Jeffries’s remark about using “maximum warfare” in response to Republican redistricting efforts as part of a broader pattern.

“This political violence stems from a systemic demonization” of former President Donald Trump and his supporters, Leavitt said, arguing that years of criticism have contributed to a climate of hostility.
