Ohio Senator JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, was confronted by CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday about Trump’s avoidance of military service during the Vietnam War due to a medical deferment for bone spurs. Trump has faced criticism, particularly after reports that the diagnosis was made as a favor to his father.

Vance defended Trump, stating, “Donald Trump didn’t serve in the military, but he didn’t lie about it… He really honors our veterans.” He contrasted Trump with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who recently faced scrutiny for a 2018 comment implying he served in combat, despite never being deployed in a war zone during his 24 years in the Army National Guard.

Walz’s campaign has acknowledged that the governor “misspoke” in 2018. Vance, who served in the Marine Corps as a combat correspondent in Iraq, criticized Walz, saying, “It’s not right to mistake or to embellish what you’ve done.”

Vance emphasized the importance of honesty regarding military service, taking a pointed jab at Walz while defending Trump’s actions during the Vietnam era.
