Israel intercepted a Gaza-bound aid boat early Monday carrying Greta Thunberg, “Game of Thrones” actor Liam Cunningham, and 10 other activists, according to Israeli officials and the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which organized the mission.
The vessel, named Madleen, was reportedly carrying food, baby formula, and medical supplies to Gaza. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said the British-flagged boat was safely diverted to Israel and that all aboard would be returned to their home countries. The ministry posted a photo of Thunberg smiling, adding she was “safe and in good spirits.”
Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament aboard the ship, said on X that the group was intercepted in international waters and detained around 2 a.m. local time. The Israeli government, in turn, described the ship as a “selfie yacht” and dismissed the trip as a publicity stunt.
“This seizure blatantly violates international law,” said Huwaida Arraf, a human rights lawyer and flotilla organizer, insisting Israel had no legal authority to detain the crew in international waters.
Israel maintains that there are approved channels to deliver humanitarian aid into Gaza.
