The IRS whistleblowers who alleged that the Justice Department slow-walked its investigation into Hunter Biden’s tax case have been promoted to senior positions at the Treasury Department.
Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, who testified before Congress about alleged DOJ interference, will now serve as senior advisers overseeing IRS reform. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent praised them for exposing misconduct and vowed to eliminate waste and reform the agency.
“These veteran civil servants join us to help drive much-needed cultural reform within the IRS,” Bessent said.
Shapley and Ziegler previously testified that federal prosecutors slow-walked charges against Hunter Biden, whom President Joe Biden pardoned before leaving office.
Republican lawmakers, including Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), celebrated the promotions, calling them a win for whistleblowers.
The two said they were grateful to Bessent and Congress, adding, “We have been motivated by one singular mantra: do what’s right, and do it the right way.”
