The IRS has informed House Republicans that former contractor Charles Littlejohn leaked tax data from 405,427 taxpayers, nearly six times more than initially reported.
Acting IRS Commissioner Doug O’Donnell disclosed the new figures in a letter to House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH), stating that most of those affected were businesses, though some disclosures included personal information. Last year, the agency had estimated that 70,000 taxpayers were impacted.
Littlejohn, sentenced to five years in prison, leaked tax records of Donald Trump and Elon Musk to media outlets, including The New York Times and ProPublica.
The revelation comes as Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) seeks access to IRS systems, and amid major layoffs at the agency under the Trump administration. O’Donnell is set to retire in the coming days, raising further questions about the IRS’s handling of the breach.
