Copenhagen, Denmark — Global perceptions of the United States have declined sharply under President Donald Trump and now rank below views of Russia in a major international democracy survey released Friday, according to Reuters.
The Democracy Perception Index, commissioned by the Denmark-based Alliance of Democracies Foundation, found the United States’ global favorability rating dropped from a positive 22% two years ago to negative 16% in 2026. Russia registered a negative 11% rating, while China received a positive 7% perception score in the survey.
The poll surveyed more than 94,000 people across 98 countries between March and April. Researchers said respondents frequently identified the United States as one of the greatest perceived threats to world stability, behind Russia and Israel.
Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, founder of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation, blamed worsening international perceptions on several Trump administration policies, including tariffs, threats involving Greenland, tensions within NATO, and the administration’s handling of conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine.
Relations between the United States and European allies have deteriorated in recent months amid disputes over defense commitments and military operations tied to the Middle East conflict. Trump has also suggested the possibility of withdrawing from NATO after criticizing European allies for refusing to send naval forces to secure shipping lanes near the Strait of Hormuz.
The report was released ahead of the Copenhagen Democracy Summit scheduled for next week.
