Tom Homan, President-elect Trump’s incoming “border czar,” stated plans to reinstate family detention centers in an interview with The Washington Post. Homan said those crossing the border illegally “put [their] family in that position” and emphasized the need for new detention facilities, with the required capacity determined by data.
Homan noted the Biden administration dismantled family detention centers in 2021, deeming them inhumane. He estimated during a prior CNN interview that 100,000 beds would be needed for mass deportation, acknowledging the expense but calling it a potential long-term tax savings.
As a former ICE official, Homan oversaw 400,000 deportations in 2012. He will now collaborate with South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, Trump’s DHS nominee, on border security efforts.
Homan also announced plans to investigate the welfare of 300,000 minors whose caretakers no longer report to federal caseworkers, citing concerns about forced labor or trafficking.
