Washington, DCHunter Biden has drawn attention for comments sharply critical of illegal immigration and for publicly questioning his alignment with the Democratic Party, remarks that complicate familiar political narratives ahead of ongoing immigration debates. Speaking on the Shawn Ryan Show podcast, Biden said the United States needs “vibrant immigration” but should not prioritize people in the country illegally over veterans and others who have served the nation.

Biden argued that limited resources should first go to Americans, particularly veterans recovering from decades of war. He said providing hotel rooms to migrants without legal status while veterans struggle reflects misplaced priorities. At the same time, he pushed back against rhetoric that portrays immigrants broadly as criminals, saying that many undocumented workers perform essential labor that sustains everyday life in the U.S. economy.

In the interview, Biden also defended the Biden administration’s efforts on border policy, claiming that Republicans had once agreed to support a bipartisan Senate border bill before former President Donald Trump urged GOP lawmakers to abandon it. Biden said Trump preferred to keep immigration unresolved for political leverage, a claim Democrats have repeatedly made during recent legislative fights.

Notably, Biden said he is uncertain about his current political affiliation, stating, “I don’t even know if I’m a Democrat anymore.” Conservative commentators seized on his criticism as validation of Republican arguments, while others highlighted his continued rejection of mass-deportation narratives.
