Hungary will mirror a policy announced by Donald Trump and designate antifa a terrorist organization, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said Friday. Speaking on state radio, Orbán welcomed Trump’s Thursday declaration that he intends to classify antifa as a “major terrorist organization” in the United States.
“Antifa is indeed a terrorist organization,” Orbán stated. “In Hungary, too, the time has come for us to classify organizations such as antifa as terrorist organizations, following the American model.”
Antifa, short for “anti-fascist,” generally refers to a loose network of left-wing activists opposing fascism and far-right groups. While largely an ideology, some adherents have adopted militant tactics. Orbán cited a 2023 incident in Budapest where antifascist activists allegedly attacked participants at a far-right gathering.
Among those accused was Italian activist Ilaria Salis, who spent more than a year in Hungarian custody before being released to house arrest in 2024. She later won a seat in the European Parliament, gaining legal immunity, which sparked tensions between Hungary and Italy. Hungarian prosecutors have sought an 11-year prison sentence.
Orbán criticized her release, saying antifa activists “beat peaceful people in the street” and later gained platforms to criticize Hungary’s rule of law.
