House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Sunday that Republicans will protect core entitlement programs but must “eliminate” individuals receiving Medicaid who are not eligible, as the GOP pushes forward with major federal spending cuts.

In an interview on Fox News, Johnson emphasized that Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid would be protected for “legal beneficiaries,” but argued the system is strained by “able-bodied” individuals who should not be enrolled.

The comments follow House Republicans’ adoption of a Senate framework advancing President Donald Trump‘s legislative agenda, which directs $880 billion in cuts through the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The scale of reductions has raised bipartisan concern about potential Medicaid cuts.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) warned Thursday that she and other Republicans will oppose any bill stripping benefits from seniors and vulnerable populations.

Democrats and health advocacy groups are preparing to make Medicaid a major issue in the 2026 midterms, especially in competitive swing states.
