Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) introduced a proposal to amend the Constitution to allow former President Donald Trump to seek a third term if his first two terms were non-consecutive. The amendment would not permit any president to serve three consecutive terms or exceed two full terms if they had assumed office for more than two years of another president’s term.
Ogles, a member of the Trump-aligned House Freedom Caucus, stated that the amendment is necessary to “correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration.” The measure, however, is highly unlikely to succeed, as constitutional amendments require a two-thirds vote in Congress and ratification by 38 states.
Critics have called the proposal a distraction. Rep. Becca Balint (D-Vt.) suggested Ogles is deflecting from his own campaign finance controversies, while Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) remarked, “Two terms is enough chaos for any nation to endure.”
