Amid worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, over a dozen House Democrats have signed a letter urging the Trump administration to formally recognize a Palestinian state. The initiative, led by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), reflects growing pressure on U.S. leadership to respond to international moves toward Palestinian recognition.

The letter, addressed to Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calls on the U.S. to join countries such as France, the U.K., and Canada in recognizing Palestinian statehood. It follows French President Emmanuel Macron’s pledge to raise the issue at the UN in September.

New signatories include Reps. Chellie Pingree, Nydia Velazquez, Jim McGovern, and André Carson. Others like Reps. Greg Casar, Maxwell Frost, and Veronica Escobar had supported a similar 2023 resolution affirming Palestine’s right to exist.

Khanna highlighted the Arab League’s recent two-state peace plan, calling it a framework for peace and security. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman emphasized that recognition must be paired with Hamas disarmament and mutual security guarantees.

Rep. Al Green confirmed plans to reintroduce his 2023 resolution, while lawmakers anticipate more pro-Palestinian initiatives in the months ahead.
