AUSTIN, Texas — State Sen. James Talarico defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett in Texas’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary, securing 53% of the vote with 90% of ballots counted early Wednesday.
Crockett received 45.7%. Talarico, a former public school teacher and Presbyterian seminarian, led throughout election night and called for every ballot to be counted after reports that some voters were turned away from precincts. Both candidates acknowledged voting irregularities in Dallas and Williamson counties after countywide voting locations were replaced with neighborhood sites earlier this year, complicating access for some voters.
Talarico dominated in Travis County, earning 76% of the Democratic vote there, while Crockett performed strongly in areas around Dallas and Houston. The Associated Press called the race around 2:30 a.m.
In the closing weeks of the primary, Talarico saw a fundraising and polling surge following controversy over a canceled appearance on “The Late Show,” which was linked to equal-time rules. He raised $2.5 million after the segment later aired online.
On the Republican side, Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton advanced to a May 26 runoff.
