As Texas Democrats remain out of state to block a Donald Trump-backed congressional map, Gov. Greg Abbott on Sunday threatened to initiate legal proceedings to remove them from office.

Over 50 Democrats left the state to deny quorum in the Texas House, halting progress on a redistricting plan that could give Republicans five additional seats in the 2026 midterms. Abbott called the act “truancy” and ordered them to return by 3:00 PM Monday or face potential removal based on a 2021 nonbinding opinion from Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Abbott further claimed that lawmakers fundraising to pay daily fines—$500 per day—could be committing felonies and that donors might also face legal consequences. He vowed to pursue extradition of any “out-of-state felons.”

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said he would protect the visiting Democrats, while the Texas Democratic Caucus responded defiantly: “Come and take it.”

Democrats argue the redistricting plan unfairly targets communities of color and diverts attention from flood recovery legislation. Republicans counter that partisan redistricting is allowed mid-decade.
