House Democrats elected Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), 74, as the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, defeating Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) in a 131-84 vote. Connolly’s victory represents resistance to a generational shift that has recently unseated several older Democratic leaders.
Connolly had strong backing from veteran lawmakers, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Supporters cited his energy and ability to challenge the Trump administration despite his age and recent cancer diagnosis. “Gerry’s a young 74, cancer notwithstanding,” said Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.).
Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent figure among House Democrats, also lost a vote in the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee the day prior.
