The Department of Health and Human Services has initiated a global research project to investigate the causes of rising childhood autism rates, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Thursday during a Trump Cabinet meeting. Kennedy claimed that by September, “we will know what has caused the autism epidemic,” and that it could lead to eliminating certain exposures.
Kennedy, a longtime vaccine critic, is leading the initiative despite decades of scientific evidence showing no link between vaccines and autism. Trump echoed unsubstantiated claims, suggesting the cause could be “something artificial… maybe it’s a shot,” without citing evidence.
Experts firmly reject these assertions. Numerous peer-reviewed studies and health agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have consistently found no connection between vaccines and autism. The rise in diagnoses is attributed to improved screening, broader diagnostic criteria, and increased awareness.
Kennedy has reportedly enlisted David Geier, previously sanctioned for practicing medicine without a license, to lead the study.
