Faculty at Harvard University filed a lawsuit Friday against the Trump administration, challenging a federal review tied to allegations the school failed to protect students from antisemitism. The suit was filed by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and its Harvard chapter.
At issue is a letter from the administration demanding policy changes as a condition to retain $9 billion in federal funding. The lawsuit argues such threats amount to an “existential gun to the head” and jeopardize research institutions’ academic freedom and global leadership in science and medicine.
The legal challenge follows the administration’s recent $400 million grant cut to Columbia University amid a similar probe. Education Secretary Linda McMahon warned Harvard may face comparable penalties.
McMahon accused the university of failing to protect Jewish students and promoting “divisive ideologies.” The lawsuit is the second by AAUP in recent weeks, following a suit over the deportation of pro-Palestinian students with legal status.
