Vice President Kamala Harris sharply criticized former President Donald Trump for spreading falsehoods about the federal response to Hurricane Helene, calling his actions “incredibly irresponsible.” Harris condemned Trump’s claims that the government was withholding aid from Republican disaster victims and that FEMA had run out of money due to immigration programs. “It’s about him. It’s not about you,” Harris said, urging survivors to apply for available federal resources.

Helene has caused over 220 deaths across six states, while Florida braces for the imminent landfall of Category 5 Hurricane Milton. Trump also falsely claimed President Joe Biden ignored calls from Georgia’s governor, despite Biden having spoken with him.

Harris also took aim at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, accusing him of “playing political games” in the wake of Helene. DeSantis denied avoiding communication, stating he hadn’t known about Harris’ outreach. He later called Harris “delusional,” asserting that her criticism was politically motivated, while emphasizing his focus on the state’s needs.

Despite the tensions, DeSantis confirmed he had communicated directly with President Biden to prepare for Hurricane Milton.
