A new Echelon Insights poll finds that nearly half of voters believe the U.S. economy is performing poorly, underscoring a key challenge for President Donald Trump as he enters the second year of his second term.

While Trump’s job approval stands at 47% approve and 51% disapprove, the survey shows deep unease about economic conditions. Asked to rate the state of the economy, about half of respondents said it is “bad” or “very bad,” with concerns ranging from inflation to housing costs.

The poll also reveals a tight political landscape. Democrats hold a narrow 47-46 edge on the generic congressional ballot ahead of the 2026 midterms. Meanwhile, voters are split over Trump’s federal takeover of Washington, D.C.’s police force, with 46% opposed and 42% in support.

On redistricting, 37% of voters say Republicans bear greater responsibility for partisan gerrymandering, compared to 24% who blame Democrats.

With voters sharply divided on politics but pessimistic about the economy, the issue is likely to dominate the next election cycle.
