House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) denounced multiple bomb threats against congressional Democrats on Thanksgiving, allegedly signed “MAGA.” Jeffries called the threats “unacceptable” and urged maximum security for members of Congress.
Threats were reportedly made against several Connecticut Democrats, including Sen. Chris Murphy and Reps. Jim Himes, Rosa DeLauro, John Larson, Joe Courtney, and Jahana Hayes. The threats included claims of pipe bombs in mailboxes and swatting attempts. Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI) also reported a threat against his home, though no bomb was found.
Jeffries stated that his office is in contact with the Sergeant at Arms to ensure member safety. The FBI is investigating the threats, which also targeted Trump allies, including Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and former Rep. Lee Zeldin.
President Joe Biden confirmed the FBI’s involvement, saying, “We’re working that hard.” This comes amid an increase in threats against lawmakers, with Capitol Police reporting 8,008 cases in 2023, up from 7,508 in 2022.
