A Guatemalan mother identified as “Sarahi” was detained for five days after accidentally taking a wrong turn toward the Ambassador Bridge to Canada while driving to Costco in Detroit. She and her children were initially held by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before being transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to the Detroit Free Press.

Sarahi entered the U.S. unlawfully in 2018, CBP officials said. Her prolonged detention stemmed from her decision not to be separated from her children. Once the children were placed with a guardian, she was transferred to ICE custody.

Her attorney described the experience as traumatizing, especially for her 5-year-old daughter. Sarahi reported poor conditions, including cold temperatures and lack of access to medical care, during detention. She was released on March 12 with her daughters, ages 1 and 5, while her 19-year-old brother remains in custody.

She is scheduled for a court hearing in June and could face deportation to Guatemala.
