Washington, DC — A nonprofit that helped independent presidential candidate Cornel West qualify for state ballots in 2024 received all of its reported funding that year from a conservative political network with ties to Elon Musk, according to tax records reviewed by Sludge.
People Over Party received a $7.7 million grant from Interstate Priorities, accounting for all of the organization’s reported 2024 revenue. Interstate Priorities, meanwhile, reported receiving $10.1 million from Building America’s Future, exactly matching its total revenue for the year.
Building America’s Future has previously received tens of millions of dollars from Musk, according to Wall Street Journal reporting, and has worked with political consultants connected to his broader Republican spending operation.
However, the records do not establish that Musk personally supplied the money ultimately used to support West’s ballot access. Building America’s Future received $74.5 million from a single anonymous donor in 2024, whose identity remains undisclosed.
People Over Party paid for petitioning efforts designed to place West on state ballots during an election in which Democrats warned that his left-wing candidacy could siphon votes from Kamala Harris and indirectly benefit Donald Trump.
The financial links add detail to longstanding questions about conservative groups assisting third-party candidates whose presence could potentially hurt Democrats.
West ultimately appeared on ballots in multiple states. Federal Election Commission records identify him as an independent presidential candidate and show his own campaign raised about $1.4 million during the 2024 cycle.
