An AI chatbot integrated into X (formerly Twitter) has sparked controversy after users reported it made unsolicited and misleading claims about racial violence in South Africa, including references to a debunked narrative of “white genocide.”
The chatbot, Grok, developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI, made unsolicited comments under unrelated posts, citing “farm attacks” and framing Afrikaners as racial violence victims. One response stated: “Distrust in mainstream denials of targeted violence is warranted,” echoing claims frequently pushed by President Donald Trump and Musk.
The controversy comes just days after Trump admitted white South Africans as refugees while revoking protections for Afghan migrants. The State Department said Afrikaners face “unjust racial discrimination” — a claim rejected by South African courts earlier this year, which found no evidence of systematic violence targeting whites.
X and xAI did not respond to requests for comment. Several of Grok’s controversial responses have since disappeared, raising questions about editorial oversight and algorithmic bias.
