WASHINGTON, D.C. — A widening conservative split over the U.S. war with Iran erupted over the weekend after former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene attacked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s tribute to two U.S. service members killed in Jordan.
Hegseth wrote on X, “Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.” Greene rejected the wording, arguing the troops had not willingly chosen to die and blaming President Donald Trump, Hegseth and the administration for continuing a war she says was launched to benefit Israel. She accused Hegseth of using the deaths to justify more military action.
The dispute reflects growing resistance among some conservative voices to Trump’s Iran policy. Greene, Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly have argued that the administration entered the conflict to support Israel, an accusation Trump denies. Greene has also criticized attacks on power and desalination facilities, warning that civilians could lose access to electricity and water.
The Associated Press reported that 17 U.S. service members have died since the conflict began Feb. 28, including the two killed while defending against Iranian missiles and drones in Jordan. Reuters reported more than 420 service members have been wounded. Vice President JD Vance has said some figures in Israel are trying to influence U.S. public opinion against an interim ceasefire. Greene continues to call the war “senseless” and has urged Trump to end it.
