Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic vice-presidential candidate, “misspoke” in a 2018 video about “weapons of war that I carried in war,” according to a Harris-Walz campaign spokesperson.

Republicans, including vice-presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance, questioned Walz’s military record after Vice President Kamala Harris announced him as her running mate. Criticism arose from a 2018 video where Walz stated, “We can make sure that those weapons of war, that I carried in war, is the only place where those weapons are at,” implying he had served in a combat zone.

Walz served 24 years in the Army National Guard but never deployed to a combat zone.

Lauren Hitt, a Harris-Walz campaign spokesperson, clarified that Walz misspoke, emphasizing that he handled weapons of war but did not serve in a combat zone. Hitt also criticized Vance and Trump for prioritizing the gun lobby over children’s safety.

Vance served four years in the Marine Corps as a combat correspondent, deploying to Iraq in 2005.
