Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) has introduced a bill that would block more than $150 million in federal funding for Washington, D.C.’s Metro system unless it is renamed the “Trump Train.” The Make Autorail Great Again Act also proposes renaming WMATA to the Washington Metropolitan Authority for Greater Access, or WMAGA—a nod to Donald Trump‘s “Make America Great Again” slogan.

Steube claims the bill would encourage “public-facing excellence and patriotism” and called WMATA in need of a “fresh identity.” The legislation is unlikely to pass but represents the latest in a string of symbolic GOP proposals honoring Trump, including past efforts to rename Dulles Airport, redesign U.S. currency, and allow a third presidential term.

The D.C. Metro, long seen as a benchmark in public transit performance, has improved under CEO Randy Clarke since 2022, especially in safety and cleanliness. While facing funding shortfalls, it is preparing to serve major events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2027 NFL Draft.

WMATA has not publicly commented on the bill.
