An Iranian government-linked hacking group has been targeting officials on the campaigns of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, Google’s cybersecurity arm announced Wednesday. The report comes after the Trump campaign confirmed to POLITICO that it had been hacked.

Google’s Threat Analysis Group identified APT42, a hacking group associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as the culprit. The group targeted the personal email accounts of around a dozen individuals connected to Biden and Trump, including current and former U.S. officials and campaign workers.

Google blocked multiple attempts by APT42 to access these accounts, notified the campaigns, and referred the cases to law enforcement. The report did not confirm whether APT42 was behind any specific hack and leak operation but highlighted ongoing attempts to compromise accounts tied to Biden, Trump, and Vice President Kamala Harris.

APT42 also gained access to the personal Gmail account of a high-profile political consultant, though the consultant was not named. The hacking group had previously attempted to interfere in the 2020 U.S. presidential elections.
