Aix-Marseille University in France reports receiving 298 applications for its new Safe Place For Science program, launched in response to President Trump’s sweeping cuts to U.S. scientific funding. Of the eligible applicants, 135 are American researchers, many from top institutions such as NASA, Johns Hopkins, Yale, Stanford, and Columbia.

The program offers a “safe and stimulating environment” for scientists, with about 20 Americans expected to begin work in France this June. University President Éric Berton noted that the program aims to support researchers “wishing to pursue their research in complete freedom.”

Trump’s administration has slashed funding to the National Institutes of Health and ended federal diversity programs, impacting fields from climate science to biomedical research. France and other European countries are seizing the opportunity to recruit displaced U.S. talent. France’s CentraleSupélec recently announced a $3.2 million grant for halted U.S. research, while the Netherlands is exploring a similar initiative.

A Nature survey found over 1,200 U.S. scientists considering relocation due to the Trump cuts.
