Former national security adviser Robert O’Brien advocated for U.S. ownership of Greenland during a Sunday interview, asserting that the U.S. should purchase the self-governing territory if Denmark cannot meet its defense obligations. Speaking on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures, O’Brien emphasized Greenland’s strategic importance as Arctic ice melts, opening new shipping routes.
Greenland, an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark, was described by O’Brien as a critical “highway from the Arctic to North America.” He argued that the Arctic would become a geopolitical focal point, potentially reducing reliance on the Panama Canal. “The Russians and Chinese are all over the Arctic,” O’Brien said, highlighting the region’s growing significance for U.S. national security.
O’Brien cited former President Trump’s assertion that the U.S. would not defend Greenland without compensation. He proposed that Denmark sell Greenland to the U.S., suggesting it could be integrated with Alaska due to cultural ties between Greenland’s Indigenous people and Alaskans. Trump recently reiterated this view, calling U.S. ownership of Greenland “an absolute necessity.”
Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte Eged rejected the proposal, stating Greenland “will never be for sale.” Denmark, meanwhile, announced a new security package to bolster Arctic defenses.
