Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has filed a federal lawsuit against FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell and former FEMA supervisor Marn’i Washington, alleging civil rights violations in relief operations after Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The lawsuit accuses FEMA officials of discriminating against Florida residents who support President-elect Donald Trump, claiming that some homes with Trump signs were intentionally bypassed for aid.
Washington, dismissed from FEMA after reports emerged, allegedly instructed workers to avoid homes displaying Trump campaign signs in Lake Placid, Florida. In response, Criswell condemned Washington’s actions as violating FEMA’s principles and fired her, calling the behavior “reprehensible.”
Moody said the lawsuit aims to uncover the extent of any political bias in FEMA’s hurricane response. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis supports the lawsuit and has called for further investigations. Criswell, who also faces scrutiny from Congress, is set to appear before the House Oversight Committee next week.
