WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) said Sunday that Democrats should “own” responsibility for the ongoing government shutdown, which has now stretched past 30 days. Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Fetterman expressed frustration that millions of Americans are losing access to essential services, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
“It’s deeply distressing that 42 million people are losing food stamp benefits,” Fetterman said, adding that Democrats must acknowledge their role in the stalemate. “I feel like the Democrats really need to own the shutdown. I mean, we’re shutting it down.”
The Senate needs 60 votes to reopen the government, but Democrats are demanding renewal of expiring Obamacare subsidies, using the shutdown as leverage for broader policy goals. Fetterman said while he supports protecting tax credits, he refuses to let families face “food insecurity.”
A court recently ordered the Trump administration to tap into a $5 billion emergency fund to cover delayed SNAP benefits, though experts warn the amount covers less than a full month. Fetterman urged lawmakers to reopen the government to support both federal workers and struggling families.
“These are the kinds of people I fight for,” he said. “Now it seems we’re moving against our core values.”
