The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has fired four Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employees for bypassing leadership to approve tens of millions in payments to New York City for housing migrants in luxury hotels. DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin confirmed the terminations, including FEMA’s Chief Financial Officer, two program analysts, and a grant specialist.

The move follows a revelation by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that FEMA sent $59 million last week to reimburse NYC for migrant housing costs. Musk called the payment illegal, stating, “That money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high-end hotels for illegals! A clawback demand will be made today.”

NYC’s deputy press secretary, Liz Garcia, defended the city, stating the funds were properly allocated, requested in April 2024, and used for hotel costs, food, and shelter.

Following this controversy, President Trump signed an executive order reviewing FEMA’s future, with a report due by July 20.
