FEMA has denied North Carolina’s request to extend full federal reimbursement for Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, prompting criticism from Governor Josh Stein and other state leaders.

The request, submitted under major disaster declaration FEMA-4827-DR, sought an additional 180 days of 100% federal funding for debris removal and emergency protective measures. FEMA responded in an April 11 letter stating the increased funding “is not warranted.”

Governor Stein expressed disappointment, stating he received the denial while visiting families still recovering in Newland. “The need in Western North Carolina remains immense,” he said, urging the Trump administration to reconsider, even for a shorter 90-day extension.

Federal assistance for the disaster currently remains at 90%, a rate established in December 2024. FEMA’s letter notes the state may appeal the decision within 30 days.

Rep. Chuck Edwards called the 100% extension “unprecedented” but pledged to assist recovery through other means, including FEMA casework and exploring financial alternatives.
