The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has begun rehiring some employees who were recently laid off as part of the Trump administration’s effort to reduce the federal workforce. Over the weekend, several probationary staffers in the agency’s medical device division were informed that their terminations had been rescinded, following industry pressure.

The layoffs, part of a broader push to cut 10% of the federal workforce, initially resulted in about 700 FDA staffers losing their jobs, with over 220 from the medical device center. The decision to rehire some employees followed lobbying from AdvaMed, a trade group representing the medical device industry, which warned of delays in product approvals.

Other agencies, including the National Nuclear Security Administration, the USDA, and the Indian Health Service, have also reversed some layoffs. However, no similar action has been taken for FDA employees in food and tobacco regulation.
