FBI Director Kash Patel told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that Tyler Robinson, the accused assassin of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, appeared to confess in a Discord chat shortly before his arrest. Patel confirmed reporting from The Washington Post and said the FBI has served legal process on Discord to preserve records as evidence.

“There were a lot more than 20 other users in the Discord chat, and we’re running them all down,” Patel testified. He added that the FBI would investigate “anyone and everyone involved” in the online group.

According to prosecutors, Robinson sent messages Thursday night reading, “Hey guys, I have bad news for you all,” and, “It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this,” referencing the Utah Valley University event where Kirk was shot. Discord said its own review found “no evidence” Robinson planned the attack or promoted violence on the platform.

Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray filed seven charges against Robinson, including aggravated murder and obstruction of justice, and announced prosecutors will seek the death penalty. Robinson also allegedly confessed in online messages to his roommate that he used his grandfather’s rifle in the killing.
