Former Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Shane Lamond was convicted Monday of obstructing an investigation into Enrique Tarrio, the former Proud Boys national chair, ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson found Lamond guilty on one count of obstruction and three counts of making false statements to federal officials, including lying about tipping Tarrio off about a warrant for his arrest related to the burning of a Black Lives Matter banner.

Prosecutors argued that Lamond, who led MPD’s Intelligence Branch, began sharing confidential law enforcement information with Tarrio through Telegram after the 2020 election, instead of gathering intelligence from him. Judge Jackson noted evidence suggesting Lamond relayed information to Tarrio, who then widely shared it, contradicting Lamond’s claim of using Tarrio as a source.

U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves criticized Lamond’s actions, saying they violated public trust and increased community risk. Lamond’s sentencing is scheduled for April 3.

Tarrio, who testified during Lamond’s trial, was described by the judge as a “flippant and obnoxious” witness. Tarrio is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence for his role in planning the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
