The Department of Energy on Monday unveiled plans to eliminate or revise dozens of energy efficiency and other federal rules, calling it the “largest deregulatory effort in history.”

The proposal, led by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, targets regulations on appliances such as stoves, ovens, dishwashers, clothes washers, and microwaves, as well as unrelated rules on oil purchases for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and nondiscrimination for grant recipients.

Though the move doesn’t immediately repeal any rules, it initiates a fast-track rollback process. “Thanks to Donald Trump‘s leadership, we are bringing back common sense,” Wright said, blasting the regulations as costly and tied to “Green New Deal fantasies.”

Republicans argue the changes will increase consumer freedom. But critics, including Andrew deLaski of the Appliance Standards Awareness Project, warned the effort would drive up household costs and may violate federal laws that ban weakening energy standards.

The plan reflects a broader Trump administration effort to curb environmental regulations and reduce federal oversight across agencies.
