Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Thursday accused former FBI Director James Comey of calling for President Trump‘s “assassination” over a cryptic social media post that sparked backlash and triggered a federal investigation.
Comey posted a photo of seashells arranged to form “8647” — a number some online interpreted as code for “kill the 47th president.” The post drew outrage from Trump supporters and prompted Noem to announce on X that DHS and the Secret Service were investigating.
Comey deleted the image and issued a clarification: “I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. I oppose violence of any kind, so I took the post down.”
The Secret Service confirmed it is aware of the post and takes all potential threats seriously. FBI Director Kash Patel also acknowledged the post and said the agency will support the investigation.
Comey has long clashed with Trump, who fired him in 2017. He endorsed Biden in 2020 and Harris in 2024.
