Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident mistakenly deported by the Trump administration, says he endured severe abuse while imprisoned in El Salvador’s maximum-security CECOT facility. Deported on March 15 in what officials called an “administrative error,” Abrego Garcia alleges he was repeatedly beaten, deprived of sleep, and subjected to psychological torture.
In new court filings, he described being confined to metal bunks without mattresses, locked in a windowless, brightly lit cell with little access to sanitation. Guards reportedly threatened to place him with violent gang members, and he claims to have lost over 30 pounds in two weeks.
Abrego Garcia was returned to the U.S. last month but now faces human smuggling charges in Tennessee — allegations his lawyers call “preposterous” and a cover for the wrongful deportation. Though a judge ruled he could be released under conditions, his lawyers have kept him in custody out of fear of another deportation.
The Department of Justice intends to try him before seeking removal to a “third country,” not El Salvador.
