Democratic lawmakers filed an amicus brief Thursday supporting the NAACP lawsuit challenging Donald Trump‘s attempt to dismantle the Department of Education. The civil rights group argues that recent mass layoffs and the cancellation of federal education grants are unconstitutional and violate the separation of powers.

The brief was signed by over 150 Democrats, including Sens. Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren, and Reps. Jamie Raskin, Bobby Scott, and Rosa DeLauro. Warren stated, “Donald Trump is not a king, and he cannot single-handedly cut off access to education.”

The lawsuit was prompted by Trump’s executive order reducing the department’s role, resulting in thousands of staff departures and the transfer of many responsibilities to state governments. While the administration says Pell Grants and Title I funding will remain federally managed, over 1,900 Education Department employees have already been laid off or accepted buyouts.
