Democrats are resisting Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) as it gains access to Education Department systems containing personal data on millions of Americans. Lawmakers fear DOGE could dismantle the department, similar to Musk’s attempt to close the U.S. Agency for International Development.
A group of Democrats, led by Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA), sent a letter demanding transparency and vowed to fight any closure attempts. They also planned to confront Trump-appointed department leaders in Washington.
DOGE has reportedly accessed federal student loan databases, raising privacy concerns. A lawsuit filed by Student Defense and the University of California Student Association argues that DOGE’s access violates borrower privacy. Meanwhile, the Education Department insists DOGE is focused on cost-cutting and accountability.
Trump’s push to abolish the department faces hurdles, as congressional approval is required. The White House stated it is exploring ways to reduce or eliminate the department.
