House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) each confirmed Sunday that Democrats are preparing redistricting efforts in their states following California’s approval of a ballot measure to put redistricting before voters this fall.
On CNN’s State of the Union, Jeffries declined to provide specifics but acknowledged “a plan to respond” to Republican strategies, noting the GOP’s slim three-seat House majority is the narrowest since the Great Depression. Jeffries has met with New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and state lawmakers to discuss options.
Moore was more direct, telling CBS’s Face the Nation that “all options are on the table” in Maryland, where only one Republican currently holds a congressional seat. He said redistricting is necessary to ensure “fair lines and fair seats” and to counter Donald Trump’s alleged attempts to “manipulate elections.”
Beyond New York and Maryland, Democrats in Illinois are also weighing changes. The developments follow Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) signing California’s redistricting ballot measure and Texas Republicans advancing their own.
