Democratic senators admit their party mishandled border security, labeling it “political malpractice” and a key factor in President-elect Trump’s victory and Senate losses. During a post-election meeting, lawmakers criticized the Biden administration’s approach to immigration, including ending Title 42 and other Trump-era policies, which they argue fueled voter dissatisfaction.
Many Democrats, including Sens. Jon Tester, Kyrsten Sinema, and others, had previously warned that lifting Title 42 would lead to surging border crossings. Efforts to pass bipartisan reforms were unsuccessful, leaving Democrats vulnerable on the issue. Lawmakers also acknowledged that Biden’s delayed response to the crisis, coupled with rising costs and economic frustrations, alienated key voter groups, including Latinos.
Strategists and senators noted Trump’s effective messaging, which linked immigration to economic and crime concerns, resonated more with voters than Vice President Harris’s campaign. As Democrats analyze their losses, calls are growing for a more centrist approach to border security.
