Despite Vice President Kamala Harris moving toward the political center during her presidential campaign, progressive Democrats remain supportive, confident she will prioritize their goals if elected. Lawmakers like Sens. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) express no concerns over her past support for policies like Medicare for All or a fracking ban, trusting her to tackle issues like health care and climate change once in office.
Harris has adopted a more centrist stance on several issues, including private health care options, tax policy, and fracking, as Republicans attack her as too liberal. Her shift is seen as a pragmatic approach to win over moderate voters, though some progressive activists worry it may weaken her position electorally.
Still, most progressives believe Harris will continue pushing for policies aligned with their priorities, such as reducing fossil fuel consumption and expanding access to health care. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) noted the importance of winning the election to further climate action, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) praised Harris for her proposal to raise the capital gains tax rate, though it falls short of Biden’s original plan.
Some on the left, however, express concern that Harris’s campaign strategy of moving to the center could be a miscalculation, potentially dampening support from voters seeking more significant reforms.
