A new NBC News poll finds the Democratic Party’s popularity has hit an all-time low, with only 27% of registered voters viewing the party positively—the lowest rating since NBC began polling in 1990.
The decline comes amid internal divisions over how Democrats should approach President Donald Trump’s agenda. The poll shows a majority (65%) of Democratic voters now want their party to hold the line against Trump, even if it leads to gridlock, a reversal from 2017, when 59% supported compromise.
The rift became clear after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and nine other Senate Democrats voted with Republicans to advance a GOP-backed spending bill and avoid a government shutdown. The decision outraged progressives, with Indivisible, a grassroots activist group, calling for Schumer to step down. Former Biden adviser Susan Rice also criticized Schumer, urging him to “grow a spine.”
Overall, 55% of voters now have a negative view of the Democratic Party, with 38% viewing it “very” negatively. Independent voters have particularly soured, with just 11% expressing a positive opinion.
The Republican Party also holds a net-negative image (49% negative, 39% positive), but Trump’s control of the White House and Congress gives the GOP an advantage heading into the 2026 midterms, where Democrats lead Republicans by just 1 point in the battle for control of Congress (48% to 47%).
