HAVANA, Cuba Cuban officials have rejected any effort by the United States to include the country’s political leadership in ongoing negotiations, signaling limits to potential diplomatic progress between the two nations.

Vice-Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio said Cuba will not negotiate the status of President Miguel Díaz-Canel or its political system, even as both sides explore discussions on economic and trade issues. The talks come as Cuba faces an ongoing energy crisis and economic strain tied to U.S. sanctions.

According to reports, the Trump administration has considered broader economic arrangements that could address trade restrictions and longstanding compensation claims tied to property nationalized after the 1959 revolution. Cuban officials acknowledged discussions have taken place but did not provide details on timing or location.

De Cossio emphasized that while complex issues remain, dialogue is necessary to address areas of mutual interest, including trade and economic cooperation. Analysts say the talks represent a potential shift after years of limited engagement, though major disagreements persist.

The U.S. embargo and related restrictions remain central points of tension, with Cuba seeking relief while maintaining its current political structure.
