The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) has informed Arizona officials of its intention to monitor ballot drop boxes during the upcoming November election, aiming to identify potential illegal voting. This move has sparked concerns similar to those from two years ago when right-wing groups began watching drop boxes, despite no evidence of widespread electoral fraud.

In an August 15 letter to Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and Attorney General Kris Mayes, CPAC expressed a desire to discuss guidelines for this monitoring. During the 2022 midterms, reports of armed individuals monitoring drop boxes in Maricopa and Yavapai counties alarmed local and federal law enforcement, leading a federal judge to mandate that these monitors keep their distance from voters.

CPAC’s letter suggests guidelines such as keeping monitors 75 feet away from drop boxes, ensuring the boxes are on public property, and prohibiting the carrying of weapons or wearing attire suggesting law enforcement or political affiliation. However, officials from Mayes and Fontes’ offices criticized the letter, accusing CPAC of contributing to election skepticism and not acting in good faith. Mayes indicated she is open to collaboration but emphasized that Arizona’s elections are conducted fairly and will not tolerate misuse of information to identify voters.
