The investigation into the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk took a turn Wednesday evening when FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that a person of interest had been released after questioning.

“The subject in custody has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement,” Patel wrote on X. “Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency.”

Authorities have so far detained two individuals during the probe into the shooting at Utah Valley University, where Kirk was struck in the neck and killed. Both were later released without charges. Officials have not said whether additional suspects are being pursued or if the shooter remains at large.

At a press conference, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) described the killing as “a political assassination.” Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason clarified that one person was initially released after being misidentified as a suspect, but was later booked on obstruction of justice charges by campus police.

Kirk, 31, co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012 and became a leading figure in conservative politics and a close ally of Donald Trump. His death has drawn widespread condemnation and renewed calls against political violence.
